Backlinks or Inlinks are the foundation and root of any popular website. These are just links from other peoples websites that lead back to your own site. So if I place a link in a banner or small text ad on my site leading back to your website that would be a backlink for you, from my website. Now I am sure that plenty of people who are brand new to online marketing are saying "OK, so what does that mean to me?" Well these links are one of the most important factors in online marketing.
I want to make something clear here, This does not mean by any stretch of the imagination that if you have a lot of backlinks your site will be popular or even liked by the people who visit and that getting a customer in your store does not mean a darn thing unless you have something of quality to offer them. I know from my own experience that producing quality content is not that hard at all. Finding those visitors to your website is the difficult part but none the less that quality still needs to be in place to see success. There is one HUGE pitfall that so many new people make which is as soon as they hear how important backlinks are they rush right out and start doing all the wrong things to build all the wrong backlinks. I don't care what anyone tells you the quality of your back links is VITAL to your ranking.
I have heard people say that you are never penalized for having poor backlinks but I disagree completely. Put yourself in Google's shoes for a min. If you are trying to determine which site is better (site A) or (site B) you look at who the sites friends are (this is done by examining that sites backlinks). If (site A) has 4000 backlinks from 2000 websites that don't have any real content and (Site B) has only 10 backlinks but each one is from a Google page rank 5 website (Page rank or PR refers to Google's ranking system for websites, it's on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest), who's site do you think they will lend more value to?
They are going to take quality over quantity and while I don't believe you are penalized by Google directly I think if you have to many poor backlinks the public will kinda stick you in the same class as the sites with the crummy BLs. Much like in real life, if you associate with nice classy people with good jobs and decent standing in the community you are viewed to be the same whereas if you hang out with drug users and scumbags you are viewed to be like that yourself regardless of whether you really are that way or not. I want you to also remember that a back link has two purposes one is to help you gain better search engine rankings the second use is to have people click on the link and visit your site. which leads to the rule of thumb, if the back link is not going to send traffic to your site it's not going to help your ranking on Google either. Keeping that in mind should help you a great deal in determining where to go after your back links.
There are many methods and systems you can use to learn where and how to build backlinks but always remember that before you try to get a link from someones website to your own go look at their site. There is NOTHING wrong with getting a link from a Page Rank 0 site so long as the site is not junk. (PR 0 means Google has not yet ranked that site in many cases due to the site being new) What I do and this has worked great for me, I go to the website and ask myself is this a site I want to be associated with? If the answer is yes I don't care what their PR is because I know that even though that site might only get a few visitor now, the people that do come there will recognize the value of that content and pass it along to there friends and contacts because just being the person that introduces others to quality content makes you look good and give credence to your own work.
Be smart when building your business, don't get in a big hurry to build your site or your ranking, Endurance is what wins the marketing race not flash, not fancy pitch lines backed up by week content or crummy software. Q-U-A-L-I-T-Y my friends is the name of the game in all aspects of marketing from the articles you produce to the software and services you endorse. You can not place a value on your reputation!
